Is Your Sterling Silver Flatware Worth Money?
The flatware set that comes out once a year, or the box of serving pieces inherited from family, may contain silver worth evaluating. The first question is what the pieces are made of. Sterling silver and silver plate can look similar, but they are very different when you are considering selling.
Look for useful clues, not a final answer
Sterling or 925 marks can indicate sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% silver. Other marks may identify the maker or pattern. Silver-plated pieces have a thin layer of silver over another material. A stamp is a starting point for identification, rather than a substitute for examining the piece.
Total weight is not always silver weight
Some objects are weighted or contain non-silver parts. Knife handles may be hollow or filled, with a blade made from another material. That means weighing an entire set at home and multiplying by a silver price can give a misleading estimate. An evaluation needs to consider the construction and metal content.
Pattern, condition and the individual pieces can matter
Precious-metal content and current prices are important, but age, condition and other characteristics may also be relevant. Keep matching pieces together and bring the case, maker information or records if you have them. Do not assume a damaged or incomplete set has no value.
You do not need to polish it first
Bring the flatware as it is. Avoid aggressive cleaning or spending money on restoration just to prepare for a buying evaluation. If you are uncertain whether a tray, spoon or serving piece is silver, include it and ask.
