Inherited a Coin Collection? What to Know Before Selling
A box of coins can carry years of someone else’s interests, notes and careful collecting. If you have inherited a collection in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford or elsewhere in the New River Valley, you do not have to identify every piece before asking for help. Start by keeping the collection intact.
Leave coins in their holders
Keep albums, envelopes, graded holders and handwritten labels together. Those notes may help explain what the collector believed they had. Avoid removing coins from sealed grading holders, and do not throw away packaging or records before the collection has been reviewed.
Resist the urge to clean them
A brighter coin is not necessarily a more valuable coin. Polishing, scrubbing or chemical cleaning can alter the surface and affect collector interest. Bring coins as they are, even if they appear dark or tarnished. Handle loose coins carefully by their edges when needed.
Age alone does not establish rarity
Date, mint mark, condition, rarity and demand can all matter. Some pieces may be valued mainly for their gold or silver content, while others have numismatic interest. Online asking prices can be misleading if the examples differ in condition or variety, or have not actually sold.
Gather what you already know
Bring any inventory, purchase receipts, grading information and notes. You do not need to pay for new grading or sort everything before your first conversation. If the collection belongs to an estate or is shared with others, make sure you are authorized to sell before accepting an offer.
Choose which pieces you want to consider selling
Set aside anything you want to keep for sentimental reasons. You can ask for an evaluation of part of a collection without deciding to sell it all. A clear explanation of the items and offer helps you make that choice at your own pace.
